Volkswagen unveils 2026 Grand California with lounge-inspired upgrades

The updated version of the brand’s flagship campervan builds on the Crafter platform and includes a range of visual and functional enhancements.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has revealed the 2026 model year Grand California, set to make its debut at this year’s Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf from 29th August to 7th September.

The updated version of the brand’s flagship campervan builds on the Crafter platform and includes a range of visual and functional enhancements aimed at improving comfort and usability. All updates will be introduced into production later this year.

Designed to deliver a lounge-like experience, the latest Grand California features a new ‘Atami Bamboo’ décor across the table and kitchen work surfaces, paired with a durable PVC floor in the same finish.

A redesigned black kitchen tap complements the wood-effect accents, creating what Volkswagen describes as a Mediterranean yacht character throughout the otherwise white interior.

Storage and dining functionality have also been refined. An upgraded mobile table can now be locked externally to the kitchen unit, allowing meals and drinks to be enjoyed outdoors.

Additional luggage nets in the overhead cabinets provide easier storage for clothes and accessories, and a new optional blackout and thermal mat set ensures improved privacy and climate control in the cab area.

Available in two lengths – the 6.0-metre Grand California 600 with a transverse bed and the 6.8-metre Grand California 680 with a longitudinal sleeper layout – the vehicle is underpinned by the latest generation Crafter platform.

Standard features now include Volkswagen’s ‘Digital Cockpit Pro’ digital instruments, an updated infotainment system with a 10.4-inch touchscreen (or optional 12.9-inch version), and a range of driver assistance systems.

These include emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, parking sensors front and rear, and traffic sign recognition.

‘Travel Assist’ – offering semi-autonomous driving functionality – is also available as an option.

A new electronic parking brake switch frees up interior space, making it easier to rotate the driver’s seat and integrate it into the living area.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will showcase the Grand California alongside several other campervan innovations in Hall 16 of the exhibition.
