What experienced motorhome owners wish they’d known before buying

For many, buying a motorhome isn’t just a purchase - it’s the start of a love affair.

If you’re new to the world of motorhomes, there’s no better way to prepare than by learning from those who’ve already clocked up the miles.

The latest Motorhome Adventure Survey for Warranty Solutions Group (WSG), completed by more than 250 UK owners, reveals fascinating insights into the lessons, surprises, and stories gathered on the open road – from naming rituals to breakdown blunders, and the realities of life on wheels.

A Love Affair on Wheels

For many, buying a motorhome isn’t just a purchase – it’s the start of a love affair. Six in ten owners (60%) have even given their pride and joy a name, often steeped in personal meaning. From Horace (“reminds me of my childhood tortoise, travelling with his home on his back”) to Ruby (after a Ruby wedding anniversary), each name tells a story.

Others prefer humour – Dobby the Hobby, Busty (“because it’s the size of a bus”), and McVitie, nicknamed “because it rattles like a biscuit tin.” Beyond the laughs, these names reflect how deeply attached people become to their vehicles – a theme that runs through almost every response.

Freedom, Family and the Unexpected

Ask any motorhome owner why they love the lifestyle and the answer is nearly always the same: freedom. As one respondent, who christened their van Freeda (“Freedom to Roam Everywhere Doing Anything”), put it – “it gives us the chance to live a life we couldn’t otherwise have.”

That sense of freedom extends far beyond travel. Many use their vans to stay close to loved ones, revisit childhood haunts, or create new memories after loss. Dave was named in honour of a father-in-law who passed away, while Amy paid tribute to a grandmother who died during WWII. Others tie their vans to family moments – one couple named theirs Rocky after their autistic son’s favourite Paw Patrol character.

Lessons from the Road

For all the romance of life on the road, experienced owners say it also comes with practical lessons they wish they’d known earlier. One of the biggest is not underestimating running costs.

Rising fuel prices and maintenance were top concerns, with one in four owners (26%) admitting that the fear of breaking down is always at the back of their mind. What starts as a simple weekend getaway can quickly become expensive once you factor in repairs, servicing, and upgrades – all part of keeping your home-on-wheels road-ready.

Another common piece of advice? Always have a backup plan. Around 27% of owners have broken down mid-trip, sharing stories that range from minor punctures to full engine failures. Yet, true to the motorhome community’s spirit, most handled these hiccups with humour and resilience.

One couple recalled finding themselves stranded on the M54 after a fuel gauge failure – fortunately, they’d packed extra jerry cans “just in case.” It’s a reminder that preparation pays off, especially when your adventure depends on four wheels and an engine.

Warranties Divide Opinion

Warranties are a divisive topic among motorhome owners. Just under half (46%) of respondents currently have one, but many still prefer to self-fund repairs. Those who choose cover say it provides valuable peace of mind and protection against costly surprises – particularly for new owners still learning their way around their van.

Others remain sceptical, citing disappointing past experiences or questioning whether warranties are worth the expense. For many, it comes down to confidence: some like the reassurance of knowing they’re covered, while others prefer to rely on their own know-how and a well-stocked emergency kit.

Upgrades and Insights

When it comes to upgrades, experience has clearly shaped smarter setups. Solar panels topped the list of must-have additions (26%), followed by awnings, Wi-Fi boosters, and clever storage solutions. As one owner summed it up: “Every trip teaches you something new – what you actually need, and what you can live without.”

And when it comes to travel, the consensus is simple: the journey matters more than the destination. Over three-quarters (78%) travel more than 1,000 miles a year, with Scotland’s NC500 standing out as the top route for its wild beauty and sense of adventure.

WSG’s New Motorhome Warranties

To support this growing community, Warranty Solutions Group has launched a new suite of motorhome warranties tailored to the unique demands of ownership. These policies cover more than 6,000 mechanical, electrical and electronic parts, along with advanced habitation protection, water ingress, and even delamination.

Designed to give buyers confidence when investing in a used motorhome, WSG’s products reflect the same freedom and security owners value most.
